While our goal at Rye Dental Associates is always to save your natural teeth, we do encounter situations when Tooth Extraction is the best solution for our patients. Tooth extraction involves removing a tooth from its socket. The experienced team at Rye Dental Associates offers normal and wisdom teeth extractions.
Teeth may need to be extracted for a variety of reasons, including:
- Overcrowding which causes problems with bite and tooth alignment.
- Infection and damage to a tooth that may spread.
- Tooth impaction, often the case with wisdom teeth.
- In preparation for Orthodontic care.
The first step in an extraction is to take an X-ray to understand the condition of the jawbone and the position of the roots. This helps us formulate the best strategy for extraction. Local anesthesia will be administered to numb the site. The tooth will then be carefully removed from its socket. Once the tooth is out, the site is cleaned and flushed. Bone grafts may be placed if necessary in the jawbone surrounding the tooth. A gauze pad is then placed over the site to control bleeding.
It is essential to keep the site clean to prevent infection. Use an icepack if there is swelling, and eat soft, cold foods. Avoid smoking, drinking and using a straw.
For your comfort, here are the different sedation methods we can offer to eliminate pain during the teeth extraction procedure:
- Local Anesthesia
- Oral Sedation
- IV Sedation
- Laughing Gas
