At Rye Dental Associates, we offer a full range of treatments to help maintain and restore the health of your teeth. One of these treatments is endodontic therapy, also known as root canal treatment.
The pulp is the inside of your tooth structure. Made of blood vessels and nerves, the pulp can become damaged and infected due to bacterial exposure. This can occur for a variety of reasons including deep decay or trauma. An infection in the pulp causes pain and swelling and can further lead to tooth loss.
Root canal treatment allows us to save the tooth from extraction, relieve the pain, and prevent further damage. A root canal involves making an opening in the tooth and removing the infected, or dead pulp tissue. The root canals of the tooth are flushed, cleaned and sterilized, then reshaped and sealed with a dental sealing material called gutta-percha. This will prevent further infection.
After the root canal treatment, your tooth will likely require the protection of a dental crown to stabilize its structure and prevent fracturing.
